“Danny Murphy Shares His Feelings on James Maddison’s Situation”

Danny Murphy has confessed that he feels somewhat let down by James Maddison’s decision not to secure a place with a Champions League team this summer, but instead moved to Tottenham Hotspur.

Murphy voiced his thoughts on this matter to talkSPORT, as he talks about the English international who is about to start his first season as a player for Spurs.

James Maddison is the star signing by Tottenham so far. Last year, he was phenomenal for Leicester City, notching up 10 goals and making nine key passes in the Premier League.

Murphy feels disheartened for Maddison after Tottenham move

His departure from the Foxes after they were relegated wasn’t a shock. Tottenham emerged as winners in the race to sign him as they start to prepare for their next chapter under new coach Ange Postecoglou.

Similar to Leicester, Tottenham had a pretty poor run in the previous season. They won’t be partaking in European matches in the following season.

In light of this, it seems that Murphy feels a little unhappy to see Maddison join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, believing that the 26-year-old has what it takes to compete at the very top tier.

“To some extent, it makes me feel disappointed for him because, in my opinion, he is a player of the Champions League material. Although he might [become one], right now he’s not. I assumed he would join a club currently in the Champions League,” Murphy stated to talkSPORT.

There is some rationale as to why clubs were hesitant in rivaling Tottenham’s offer for Maddison. Tottenham paid £40 million for his contract at the King Power Stadium which was entering its final year.

Furthermore, he has been plagued by injuries in the past. It is very likely that had he been fit throughout the whole last season, Leicester could have avoided relegation.

This is certainly a massive step for Maddison. Naturally, he will have the weight of Tottenham fans’ expectations on his shoulder. However, he is now among some truly brilliant players in Postecoglou’s team.

If he proves himself, it may not take too long before he gets to play in the Champions League, be it with Tottenham or another club.
