Commentator Believes Postecoglou’s Guidance Has Elevated 22-year-old Tottenham Player’s Offensive Capabilities

Ange Postecoglou’s strategic use of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Oliver Skipp, has seen him thrive in an advanced position on the field.

Commentator Clive Allen discussed this tactical decision whilst covering Tottenham’s recent pre-season practice game on SPURSPLAY.

Today marks the conclusion of Tottenham’s tour across Australia and Asia, with a final face-off against Singapore’s Lion City Sailors.

The hosting team seized an early lead, taking advantage of weak defence by Ben Davies and Pedro Porro.

Harry Kane spared Spurs from trailing at half-time by converting a penalty kick.

However, the situation worsened as Yves Bissouma sustained an injury during the half-time break.

A refreshed team under Postecoglou came back in the second half to dominate the hosts.

In a novel move, Postecoglou also deployed young midfielder Oliver Skipp in an enhanced offensive role, something previously unseen at Tottenham.

This strategic decision allowed the 22-year-old to command a wider area, although it may have been influenced by the capabilities of the opponent team too.

Skipp Adopting More Advanced Role for Tottenham

Expounding on this matter on SPURSPLAY, Allen commented: “Ever since Postecoglou’s term started, Skipp has been playing surprisingly upfront, a move we have not seen before.”

“Despite this being the start of the season, Skipp’s fitness levels are impressive.

“Although having no break might impact his performance as the season progresses, for now, he seems well prepared.”

With the season on the horizon, Oliver Skipp has assured fans that he’s in peak condition, a very promising sign.

Despite limited rest since the Under-21 European Championships, Skipp had sufficient respite prior to that, serving to rejuvenate him for the season.

Skipp understood the importance of winning over his new manager at the beginning of the season.

Opting to position Skipp more forward is an interesting choice by Postecoglou.

Traditionally regarded as a safe player favouring possession over penetrative runs, this move breaks the mould.

However, this decision could have been influenced by the defensive stance of their opponents, Lion City Sailors. This allowed Skipp greater autonomy to influence the offensive play higher up the field.

It’s unlikely that Skipp will be offered the same liberties when they encounter Brentford in the upcoming weeks.
