Darren Bent has implied that James Maddison has the skills to replace Ilkay Gundogan at Manchester City as Tottenham Hotspur reportedly plans to place their initial bid for the 26-year-old.
While on talkSPORT, Bent commented after Ilkay Gundogan’s departure from City to Barcelona on a free transfer was confirmed.
Indications show that Tottenham intend to intensify their efforts to acquire James Maddison. According to The Telegraph’s report on Monday, Spurs aim to finalize a deal for the attacking midfielder this week.
Bent Believes Tottenham Target Maddison Can Succeed Ilkay Gundogan at Manchester City
Leicester demands £60 million, but Tottenham hopes an initial proposal of £40 million will persuade the Foxes to part with their key player.
There is little doubt about Maddison’s prowess, but his full potential with the English national team may still be unknown.
When questioned if Maddison could be the next Gundogan at Manchester City, the ex-Tottenham forward suggested that he could envision the player excelling at the Etihad Stadium.
“I think if Maddison goes there, yes, it might take him some time to adapt. I think it does in Pep’s system. But I’m convinced, once he got it, I’m sure he would be more than adequate to play at Manchester City,” Bent told talkSPORT.
“He’s got the talent, the technique, the ability. He can run, and he works hard. He can see a pass. There’s no reason why he couldn’t do it.”
Although it would be unexpected for Manchester City to pursue Maddison, these remarks demonstrate why Tottenham should act promptly.
Maddison has the potential to perform well in any Premier League team. Spurs must be cautious about another club making a last-minute attempt to snatch him away.
Of course, if Tottenham believed signing Maddison was crucial, he would be with the team by now. Thus, they are not going to simply splurge on him.
Nevertheless, Maddison would be an outstanding addition, and Tottenham should now focus on concluding the transfer.
