25-Year-Old Tottenham Player Accepts Blame for Previous Season’s Unsatisfactory Performances

Cristian Romero, a defender for Tottenham Hotspur, has candidly stated that he accepts culpability for the team’s disappointing season last year.

During Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, Romero shared his thoughts with Football London.

Last year was an inconsistent season for the Argentinian central defender.

Like many of his teammates at Tottenham, Cristian Romero commenced the season on a high note.

Under Antonio Conte’s leadership, Tottenham Hotspur had their best ever commencement to a Premier League season.

Nevertheless, as the mid-season break drew closer, injuries began to mount and performances started to deteriorate.

Romero subsequently went to Qatar and was instrumental in helping Argentina win their first World Cup since 1986.

Upon his return to Spurs, the team’s season began to unravel.

Conte was dismissed, Cristian Stellini was shown the door soon after, and Ryan Mason fell short in steering Tottenham to Europe.

Now, Romero expresses that he shoulders the burden of responsibility for Tottenham’s difficult season.

He acknowledges that his performances in the latter half of the season were not up to the mark.

Romero Accepts Blame for Subpar Tottenham Season

Speaking about the previous season, Romero remarked: “Coming back to Tottenham after winning the World Cup, I noticed a level of disconnect between the group and the manager. I, however, accept the blame for the season we had.

“I’m disappointed about how the season ended and am mentally preparing myself to repay the confidence the club had in me. I’m ready to give my best.

“My first game back was against Villa at our home ground; that’s where it all began.

“We had an inconsistent run, winning one game and then losing the next two. When there’s division within the team and everyone isn’t pulling together–management and players alike–it makes things very challenging. But as I mentioned earlier, I’m accepting the blame for the poor season.”

Romero revealed that he received proposals to exit Spurs during the summer, but he is committed to staying with the club.

He was subjected to criticism towards the end of last season, though he was not the only one.

Romero is recognised as a leader within the Spurs team, hence his acceptance of responsibility for the past season’s difficulties doesn’t come as a surprise.

Nevertheless, Ange Postecoglou is expected to depend substantially on Romero in the upcoming season, especially with potential new centre-back recruits.

Postecoglou’s new strategies might just be the catalyst needed to boost Romero and his teammates at Spurs.
