Sharing insights on the Tottenham Fan Chris Cowlin YouTube channel, sports journalist Ben Jacobs elaborated on why Tottenham changed direction from Raya.
“While Raya appeared to be a safe bet, Tottenham found the asking price slightly exorbitant,” Jacobs expressed.
“The turmoil at Spurs led to varied thoughts within the management team about finalizing the Raya deal at the quoted price or exploring alternative possibilities.
“Vicario offers slightly different attributes and is considered an emerging talent. He demonstrates equivalent shot-blocking capabilities, is exceptional with ball handling, and can perform as a sweeper-keeper. However, Raya may be perceived as less risky due to his Premier League acumen and reliable performance.”
Zero Tolerance for Doubt
One major lesson Tottenham has learned is to refrain from investing heavily in players about whom they harbour doubts.
On this occasion, the decision to avoid a £40m expenditure on a goalkeeper who didn’t have everyone’s approval seems to have been the correct one.
Although Raya is a dependable goalkeeper, Spurs had to make an accurate decision, and they may have discovered a potential star in Vicario who could serve as their chief goalkeeper for the foreseeable future.
Realistically, this decision is unlikely to upset the Spurs fan base.
