Rice, who just completed his medical with Arsenal, is on the brink of finalizing a transfer to the Gunners. Known as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League, Rice has an eye for spotting a strong player.
Much to everyone’s surprise, Rice labelled Ndombele, who now seems out of favor at Tottenham, as one of the toughest competitors he’s ever faced. This was stated in an interview on the Tubes and Ange Golf Life YouTube channel.

Tanguy Ndombele became a part of Tottenham in 2019, breaking the club’s record for the highest transfer fee.
There was a surge of anticipation amongst Spurs supporters back then. Many believed that manager Mauricio Pochettino had acquired one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders.
However, Ndombele’s tenure at Tottenham has largely been unsatisfactory, with the club even attempting to sell him more than once.
Presently, with Ange Postecoglou in charge, there’s speculation about Ndombele getting another chance to prove himself at Tottenham. Rice’s previous statements about him could hint at why.
Discussing his most formidable rivals, Rice, who seems Arsenal-bound, said, “This one might surprise you. He often comes under severe criticism. This may shock you, but it’s Ndombele from Spurs.
“Despite current opinions of him, I can assure you, he’s one of the most challenging I’ve ever faced. He’s exceptional. Like a freestyle footballer on the field. He’s comfortable with the ball anywhere on the pitch and skillfully uses flicks and tricks. He radiates confidence.
“You must allow players like that to have their freedom on the field. When we encountered Lyon in the Europa League, his performance was outstanding. He’s a superb player.”
Our View:
We agree with Rice – freedom on the field is absolutely essential for players like Ndombele.
Regrettably, managers like Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Antonio Conte were not prepared to grant him that freedom, which largely accounts for his struggles.
With Postecoglou currently in control, there is a significant opportunity for Ndombele to resurrect his career. Potentially playing behind a player like James Maddison in Tottenham’s attacking setup could help elevate his game to extraordinary heights.
We’re uncertain if Ndombele will feature in Postecoglou’s plans, but Rice, who has faced him in the field, has brought up some valid arguments. We believe Ndombele certainly deserves another shot.
