The lead scorer for Tottenham Hotspur, Son Heung-min, did not participate in today’s friendly against West Ham United due to insufficient training.
Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou justified this decision during an interaction with the media after the team’s 3-2 defeat against their London adversaries, source – Football London.
Postecoglou stated that since landing in Australia, Son had only participated in two training drills, hence the decision of his exemption was made.
He said: “Sonny has joined us recently and could only partake in two sessions. Thus, we decided against including him in the game today.”
“He, along with Eric Dier, Djed Spence and Joe Rodon, worked diligently in today’s training. These late entrants will hopefully be prepared to contribute in our next couple of matches.”
Following a mediocre season, the player from South Korea is looking forward to a comeback under his new coach.
The 31-year-old scored 10 goals in the 36 games of the previous Premier League, a sharp decline from 23 goals in 35 matches in the preceding season.
Following the recent addition of Manor Solomon, Son will be facing increased competition and will be keen to make a strong impact in the upcoming friendly matches.
The next game for Spurs is against the team recently dropped from the league, Leicester City. The game could witness James Maddison, a recent recruit, playing against his former team.
Son to make a comeback in Tottenham’s subsequent friendly
Just like the anxiety among Spurs followers regarding the potential departure of Harry Kane this season, Son too will be hoping for Kane to stay on.
Over the recent years, both Son and Kane have nurtured a seemingly intuitive partnership in the Premier League, immensely enhancing each other’s performances.
Today, it was confirmed that Kane won’t be transferred to any of the rival teams in the Premier League, much to the relief of the fans. But their hope is that Kane stays on with the team.
If Kane does decide to move on, it will be interesting to see if Son Heung-min gets the opportunity to perform as a central striker at times throughout the season.
If that happens, he would be competing against Richarlison who hasn’t had an amazing start in today’s pre-season loss.
Richarlison, the Brazilian forward, seemed out of form and looks forward to better performance as the Australian tour continues.
For Postecoglou, a topmost priority would be to prevent his new team from suffering another pre-season defeat against English counterparts.
