Reports suggest that Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has reportedly expressed his favor for Giovani Lo Celso than Rodrigo Bentancur to the club’s leadership.
Per Spanish sports media outlet Estadio Deportivo, Postecoglou is said to be working towards convincing Lo Celso to extend his stay at Tottenham beyond this summer.
The Australian coach has been impressed with Lo Celso’s pre-season performances, noting his scoring prowess in both friendly matches against West Ham and Lion City Sailors.
Although the 27-year-old hasn’t started a match yet, he has drawn attention for his impactful performance when brought on from the bench.
It was widely anticipated that the Argentine player would leave Spurs this summer after an 18-month loan stint at Villarreal.
However, in a recent comment, Postecoglou shared his belief that Lo Celso is a good fit for his tactical approach and expressed his interest in keeping the player.
A Spanish report now suggests that Lo Celso is indeed preferred over other midfield options by the former Celtic boss.
Postecoglou’s Preference: Lo Celso over Bentancur
Estadio Deportivo claims that Postecoglou is making a concerted effort to ensure Lo Celso remains a Spurs player beyond the summer season.
Interestingly, the report also suggests that Postecoglou has informed the Spur’s leadership about his preference for the Argentine international over other midfielders like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tanguy Ndombele, and Bentancur.
The Tottenham manager has reportedly even likened Lo Celso’s role to that of James Maddison’s in his plans.
Lo Celso’s recent performances have been impressive and he appears to be well-suited to Postecoglou’s gameplay approach.
Despite a rocky start to his Spurs career — a result of his £27 million transfer from Real Betis in January 2020 — things are looking more positive for him.
However, it’s worth noting that the claim of Postecoglou preferring Lo Celso over Bentancur might be a bit far-fetched.
Last season, Bentancur actively contributed to Tottenham’s success and, despite being injured since February, he has yet to have a chance to prove his worth to Postecoglou.
