Wayne Rooney Advices £35m Player to Leave Amid Spurs’ Rumoured Interest

Wayne Rooney has reportedly suggested that Harry Maguire, reported target for Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United defender should make a swift exit from the club.

Once noted as one of the country’s top defenders, the England captain’s time in recent seasons at Old Trafford has arguably not been the most impressive.

The turn of events took a sharp twist when Erik ten Hag removed Maguire from the captain’s role a few days back. According to The Athletic, Rooney perceives this as the last straw hinting that the defender should make a move before the transfer window closes.

Wayne Rooney believes Spurs’ Target Harry Maguire should Depart Manchester United

Harry Maguire was brought into Manchester United’s fold for an astonishing £80 million from Leicester City in 2019 (BBC).

His acquisition was seen as a response from the Red Devils to Liverpool’s procurement of Virgil van Dijk, yet the careers’ trajectory of the two has proven to be starkly different.

Last season, Maguire fell down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag’s reign, and early this week, the Man Utd manager decided to strip him of the captain’s badge.

Wayne Rooney believes that such developments do not bode well for Maguire and advises him to leave the club without delay.

The revered Manchester United veteran opined: “Removal of the armband raises questions about his future at the club. It’s an indication that the manager has lost faith in him.

“It puts Harry in a dilemma about his future course of action. The manager’s disapproval clearly signifies he is not part of the future plans. I believe Harry would want to move on to a place where he gets to play regularly, for his own good and for his national career, to aspire for more success.

“In the given circumstances, it is probably in his best interest to move on.”

Opinion:

Rooney’s advice of a move from Manchester United is indeed a wise suggestion for Maguire, and a switch to Tottenham Hotspur appears logical.

A point outlined by Miguel Delaney in his newsletter with The Independent last month is that Tottenham are enthusiastic about signing Maguire. The Sun further reported this week that Tottenham’s interest in Maguire has not waned.

Considering that Tottenham are in the hunt for new central defenders, and given the recent circumstances of Maguire at Manchester United, the English defender still makes an enticing option. Last month, Dean Jones remarked on The Football Terrace that Maguire could be nabbed for around £35 million in the coming summer, a value that could possibly drop as the transfer window draws to a close.

We are convinced that Tottenham would hit a good deal if they manage to sign him.
