Tottenham Hotspur could potentially favour Tosin Adarabioyo over Clement Lenglet in this summer transfer window, as they grapple with issues surrounding their homegrown player quota.
PA journalist George Sessions made this observation during his appearance on The Tottenham Way Podcast.
Manager Ange Postecoglou is already in the process of assembling a competitive team for next season, eyeing a top-four finish.
He has pinpointed and addressed certain areas in the squad that needed enhancement by recruiting suitable players.
After the additions of Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison, it seems Manor Solomon could be the next player to join Tottenham.
These three new signings have helped to rectify problems that plagued the Tottenham team in the previous season.
There’s still quite a bit of work to be done, with the central defence currently appearing to be the major area needing investment.
Cristian Romero is expected to be the first-choice centre-back in the forthcoming season, but he’ll require a new partner in a four-back formation.
Uncertainty surrounds the future of other defenders in the team, with the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga possibly on their way out.
There are speculations that Tottenham may opt for Tosin Adarabioyo as a preferable choice over Clement Lenglet for the upcoming summer.
With Postecoglou’s squad already fairly large, recruiting a home-grown player could assist in facilitating movements out of the club.
Tottenham could favour Tosin over Lenglet
In discussing the defensive line-up, Sessions said: “Tosin [Adarabioyo] has one year left on his contract at Fulham.
“I believe Spurs are facing a bit of a home-grown problem.
“So, it’s understandable why they may be showing more interest in him (Tosin) over Lenglet for the second centre-back role.
“It’s definitely something to keep an eye on, and this might influence departures, as several centre-backs over the past seasons, unfortunately, have not met the standards Spurs aspire to reach.”
If Adarabioyo, valued at £13m, signs for Tottenham, he could be accompanied by another defender this summer.
Micky Van de Ven and Edmond Tapsoba are also reportedly on Tottenham’s shortlist.
Tottenham might face a dilemma of having to choose between Van de Ven and Tapsoba, depending on who exits the club, to avoid running afoul of home-grown player stipulations.
Hence, it might be more pragmatic for Tottenham to sign Tosin and a Bundesliga-based defender, rather than Lenglet.
The 25-year-old is seemingly prepared to leave Fulham after a significant stint with the club based in West London.
