Though Ange Postecoglou doesn’t take on his role as Tottenham Hotspur’s head coach until July 1, questions already arise about the future of Eric Dier in the team beyond the transfer period.
The Telegraph indicates that Postecoglou is pushing for Tottenham to recruit a new central defender. The Australian coach is keen to build on the club’s acquisition of Leicester City’s James Maddison. However, this plan raises doubts about Dier’s role in the North London team.
July 1 marks the start of Dier’s final year in his contract with Tottenham. Discussions about a possible new contract for the 29-year-old defender have been held, but he is yet to sign a renewed agreement. This increases the uncertainty about his ongoing role with the club.
Dier’s Thoughts on Leaving Tottenham This Summer
Dier has no plans to leave Tottenham in the ongoing transfer period. He looks forward to working with Postecoglou and feels back in top shape. Dier, who has represented England 49 times, missed the end of the 2022/23 season due to groin surgery.
After being troubled with a groin injury since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Tottenham arranged for Dier’s surgery in May. This issue partially contributed to a drop in his performance towards the end of Antonio Conte’s tenure. Despite this setback, he continued to be an integral part of the team.

Throughout the 2022/23 Premier League season, Dier played from the start in 31 out of his 33 appearances. He also made seven Champions League appearances. However, Postecoglou’s intention to hire a new central defender, coupled with Dier’s contract nearing its end, has caused speculation about the player’s future with Spurs.
Even so, Tottenham has not informed Dier of any plans to sell him during the summer transfer window to accommodate Postecoglou’s new recruits. The club, which signed Dier from Sporting Lisbon for £4m back in August 2014, hasn’t expressed plans to unload him either.
Dier may be able to secure his spot under Postecoglou in the 2023/24 season as he is one of the first to report back for pre-season training at Hotspur Way. The defender is expected to return to the training ground this coming weekend.
